    Seagate USB drive on Suse

I bought a Seagate external USB drive model ST3160024A-RK - 160 GB. The drive looks nice and rugged, and works quite well under XP. I bought this thing to make backups easy, and therefore more frequent (my hard drive crashed two weeks ago).

The drive works fine on WinXP, no special drivers required, so I was expecting an easy go of it on Linux.

    OS: Suse Linux Pro 9.1
    uname -a: Linux linux 2.6.5-7.108-default #1 Wed Aug 25 13:34:40 UTC 2004 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

I've tried it with and without making manual entries in /etc/fstab. The OS does recognize the drive (see the /var/log/messages excerpt below), but has trouble talking to it. After I plug in the drive mount -l locks a terminal, as does sync. Sometimes after 5 to 10 minutes Konqueror will appear and attempt to display the contents of the drive, but the status bar flickers between showing the file count and showing "Stalled".

The following /var/log/messages chunk starts immediately after rebooting and plugging in the drive, and ends when I unplugged the drive. I didn't touch the system from start to end. I added the "..." lines for brevity.

    Any ideas?

    Problem solved

The Seagate drive is on its way back to amazon.com. I bought a Maxtor 120 GB USB drive. This drive worked right out of the box.

Konqueror doesn't always popup to display the Maxtor drive's contents when it mounts, and communication throughput is quite low (around 800k/s), but it works. Someone has probably found a solution to the slow throughput issue already, I need to do some searching...
