cheap video for linux: nv GT210 vs. ATI 4350 - 2.6.31 ubuntu 9.10
Hello,
I have issues with my integrated nv8300 (M5N78Pro mobo), so i think I will buy a new card.
I no not require anything special on performance front: my box is a windows audio workstation and linux desktop box. I do not play games. Video HD playback support 'd be nice, but what I'd prize the most is stability. It must be silent and low - power consumming. And, of course, cheap.
I identified gt210 and HD4350 as potential targets. I use 9.10 with stock 2.6.31 kernel.
From what I understood the current nvidia binaries are better, though ATi is better on opensource drivers and better open drivers are expected soon.
Which card should I choose? Any other suggestions?

Stick with Nvidia and you can't go wrong, at least in my opinion.

it's the igp of Asus M5N78pro mobo.Code:02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C77 [GeForce 8300] (rev a2)
Similar problems with the same mobo have been discussed on nividia linux forum (i can't post URL because of this forum's rules)

Installed 190.42 by ubuntu PPA.
Same bug reappeared.
I remeber reading that it does not appear in other mobos with the same chipset - it might be some wierd mobo configuration thing (usb controller...).

Did you try the ones from the nvidia website? Sometime Gentoo acts like a spoiled little girl and I revert to the official drivers until Gentoo starts to behave again.
