Re: DVD drive detected as CD only

Hi all, I am experiencing identical symptoms with Ubuntu 9.10 running kernel 2.6.31-20-generic,
with a HP DVD530i drive. For whatever reason, the scsi3-mmc driver is detecting the drive as supporting CDROM only. Any DVD placed in the drive is ignored as "no medium".

I hope that this is still an active thread, as I've been unable to find a solution thus far.

    Thank you.

Thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for. Now I can put my Jane Austen DVDs on my Droid X.

For commercial DVDs you need some extra packages, including libdvdcss2, which can't be distributed by Ubuntu for legal reasons.

    sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
    sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/
You can get a number of commonly desired restricted packages, including libdvdread4, flash, and java, with
    sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
libdvdcss2 is still separate, so after that again you would need to do
    sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/
