    DVD's don't work

    Hello,

I am new to ubuntu and I just installed it on my HP tower and everything is great except that my DVD drive only recognizes CD's and not DVD's. Is this a driver issue? Is there something else I need to make this work?

    Thanks

Do you mean not recognized at all or it won't play DVDs?

For commercial DVDs you need some extra packages, including libdvdcss2, which can't be distributed by Ubuntu for legal reasons.

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
    sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
You can get a number of commonly desired restricted packages, including libdvdread4, flash, and java, with
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
libdvdcss2 is still separate, so after that again you would need to do
    Code:
    sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

    Tried it but...

I tried what you said but when I entered the code I got this message:

E: Malformed line 54 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)
E: The list of sources could not be read.

    am I doing something wrong?

Insert a DVD and once it spins up, post the output of
    Code:
    dmesg | tail

Hmm, not really. The lack of kernel messages is problematic. I was hoping for an error message of some sort.

Are you running Ubuntu in a virtual machine?

Can you install mplayer, if it isn't installed.
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install mplayer
Insert a DVD and from the terminal run
    Code:
    mplayer -nocache dvdnav://
    Post the output/error messages.

    here's where we are now

I am not running it in a virtual machine it is the only OS running now. I tried what you said and here is what I got:

    MPlayer SVN-r29237-4.4.1 (C) 2000-2009 MPlayer Team
mplayer: could not connect to socket
mplayer: No such file or directory
Failed to open LIRC support. You will not be able to use your remote control.

    Playing dvdnav://.
    libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version MPlayer-custom
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.10 for DVD access
libdvdread: Could not open /dev/dvd with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/dvd for reading
libdvdnav: vm: failed to open/read the DVD
Couldn't open DVD device: /dev/dvd (No medium found)
No stream found to handle url dvdnav://

    Does that help?

No, it was a long shot and that's pretty much what I expected.

Can you post the entire output of dmesg?

You might want to make it a text file for easier handling.
    Code:
    dmesg > dmesg.txt
You'll then find the file in your current working directory.

It'll be long so use code tags.
