Try "vesa" or "nv" driver instead of nvidia in xorg.conf file.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I already tried nv driver and it only let 800x600.
it doesn't matter, I installed an older matrox card for now untill I can afford a newer, more linux-friendly card.
