Type nvidia in Terminal and hit TAB key twice. Does it list Nvidia commands? Try "vesa" or "nv" driver instead of nvidia in xorg.conf file....

I already tried nv driver and it only let 800x600.
it doesn't matter, I installed an older matrox card for now untill I can afford a newer, more linux-friendly card.
