Type nvidia in Terminal and hit TAB key twice. Does it list Nvidia commands?

Try "vesa" or "nv" driver instead of nvidia in xorg.conf file.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I already tried nv driver and it only let 800x600.
it doesn't matter, I installed an older matrox card for now untill I can afford a newer, more linux-friendly card.

thanks for your help guys, I learned a lot.
