Hi,
I'm getting these errors every time I enter a dvd:
And the system is getting slow, clearly there is something going in the harddrive then, and the system is freezing.Code:Apr 25 20:14:34 jantar kernel: [ 5508.524000] ata2.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen Apr 25 20:14:34 jantar kernel: [ 5508.524000] ata2.00: cmd ca/00:08:cf:54:c2/00:00:00:00:00/ec tag 0 cdb 0x0 data 4096 out Apr 25 20:14:34 jantar kernel: [ 5508.524000] res 40/00:01:01:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x4 (timeout) Apr 25 20:14:34 jantar kernel: [ 5508.524000] ata2: soft resetting port Apr 25 20:14:34 jantar kernel: [ 5508.724000] ata2.00: configured for UDMA/33 Apr 25 20:14:34 jantar kernel: [ 5508.724000] ata2: EH complete Apr 25 20:14:34 jantar kernel: [ 5508.724000] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] 625142448 512-byte hardware sectors (320073 MB) Apr 25 20:14:34 jantar kernel: [ 5508.724000] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off Apr 25 20:14:34 jantar kernel: [ 5508.724000] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 Apr 25 20:14:34 jantar kernel: [ 5508.724000] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA Apr 25 20:14:37 jantar kernel: [ 5511.524000] ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3 Apr 25 20:14:37 jantar kernel: [ 5511.564000] ISOFS: changing to secondary root
I have not seen this error coming other than when I'm entering dvd/cd.
My kernel is :
I'm using kubuntu 7.10Code:2.6.22-14-generic
This is happening for the last 4-5 hours. Within this time, I have upgraded the kernel.
Also, from yesterday, twice fsck exited with status 4 at bootup time, and I had to fix those errors manually. It looks like:
Please help.Code:Error reading block 180224 while getting next inode from scan UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY fsck died with exit status 4

Something unusual happening here. From my System Settings many things are missing now. Like, in regional language settings, I don't see any Keyboard Layout. Or in the network section I don't see the window where the my eth0 interface is shown. I don't know how they can vanish by part...

It could be that your hard drive is failing, have you been experiencing random reboot/shutdowns or just system errors in general? I would advise a backup solution for all your important files before proceeding further...you just never know.
Try smart self tests, here is a link for more info on SMART.
Monitoring Hard Disks with SMART | Linux Journal
Boot a LiveCD and fsck the whole (unmounted) disk.Code:sudo smartctl -t /dev/sda
And so on, until you check all partitions.Code:fsck -aV /dev/sda1 fsck -aV /dev/sda2

No reboot or shutdowns, only these messages coming, and I think the culprit is these upgrades that I have done. I bought the harddisk just 3 weeks back, and already 2 hard disk crashed on this kubuntu 7.10. I don't know if this 7.10 kubuntu has some major problem with hardware compatibility or not.
And can somebody tell why so many setting options are now missing from System Settings? Like keyboard layout, like eth0 configuration etc.
Please advise me, I am thinking of removing kubuntu 7.10, but want to keep kde (and not kde 4x), so which distro will be best suitable for me? I am thinking of debian.Imran

Here it says ata 4.00 is the dvd drive not the hard disk. is that correct?
