another X.org problem

Ok, I have a problem with my video. Sure, everything dispays (quite nicely after wrestling with this thing for some time) but I cannot seem to be able to get direct rendering working.
I'm running on an Athlon xp 2000+ with 512MB DDR. an ATI 9000 video card with 64MB RAM.... on Mandrake 10.1

I've never been able to get 3D support on this thing and I would really appreciate any help.

What driver are you using?

Did you download, and install ATI's driver?

I have Nvidia, and to get hardware acceleration, I had to install the driver from their website.
