I can't help you with your yum update problem. But HP printers are generally well supported in cups. So your chances are good you don't have to install anything.
What happens when you enter this in your browser:
localhost:631
Select [administration] and follow the steps? Note typing 'localhost' in your addressbar makes your browser listen to your own machine. So localhost:631 is not a website on the internet but a local webinterface to your printers. Can't tell an OS by it's GUI

You are right. No need to install anything. I switched off the printer then on and it detected automatically. My initial connection had not yielded hence the panic.
localhost:631 is a good resource. Thank you. Gives me various tabs which show me the number of printers my Netbook can access and various administration options which i find quite handy.
Thanks with regards
