    Though I can't tell you why only 'nomodeset' solves your issue, I can recommend sticking with whatever package your distribution has for the latest proprietary Nvidia driver. Many popular distros. package this. Other than that, it's just RTFB.

    video card

    yea, i hear ya, i dont know my way around enough anyway to try Arch or Slackware so Ubuntu is the best for me so far
