Flapping (reconnecting) external USB drive
Hi gurus, during playing movie via VLC or SMPlayer I get several time the error that file cannot be read. File was stored on external USB disk. During this error I get another dialogue message that says the new removable disk was connected..., just as if power goes off and on again or if I power on external disk. But I grep the logs and found some weird mesages (dmesg and /var/log/messages truncated outputs):
SMART returned this (tried options -d [ata|scsi|auto], but finally -d sat worked (because of issue with external disk or something simmilar)):

I have seen this sort of thing happen when your data sink (the video player) causes data overruns on the device (it is not fast enough for the stream). There are two solutions:
1. Copy the data to the hard drive first.
2. Use faster USB devices.
FWIW, when I want to do this sort of thing, I use a class 10 SD card in a USB 2.0 (or later) reader. They can handle the throughput requirements for HD video rendering. Most SD cards can't deal with that, and a lot of USB thumb drives cannot either.Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
Just remember, Semper Gumbi - always be flexible!
