    USB video capture card troubles

    Hi, linux newbie here.

I'm trying to get a usb capture card working with linux mint and haven't had much luck. I don't know the model of it, it's just some really cheap off-brand thing I bought from amazon. It worked fine on Windows. I've googled for hours and tried a ton of different stuff but can't get video to work (composite cable for gaming). Audio does work however, which is the only reason I didn't give up a long time ago.

I'm trying to record with vlc player, and am able to switch the audio to "hw:1,0" which gives me my game's audio input, but the only video input available is my laptop's webcam (which uses /dev/video0).

Here's a bunch of outputs I've seen around which you may find useful:

    device in lsusb:
Bus 002 Device 008: ID eb1a:8285 eMPIA Technology, Inc.

    relevant dmesg:
    [ 7633.564190] usb 2-3: >new high-speed USB device number 9 using ehci_hcd
    [ 7633.700423] usb 2-3: >New USB device found, idVendor=eb1a, idProduct=8285
    [ 7633.700435] usb 2-3: >New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=1, SerialNumber=2
    [ 7633.700442] usb 2-3: >Product: USB 28285 Device
    [ 7633.700448] usb 2-3: >SerialNumber: 0

I read I need to change the input but this doesn't work:
    v4l2-ctl -i 1
    VIDIOC_S_INPUT: failed: Invalid argument

Only my laptop webcam shows with
    v4l2-ctl -n
    ioctl: VIDIOC_ENUMINPUT
    Input : 0
    Name : Camera 1
    Type : 0x00000002
    Audioset : 0x00000000
    Tuner : 0x00000000
    Standard : 0x0000000000000000 ()
    Status : 0x00000000 (ok)
    Capabilities: 0x00000000 (not defined)

    Any suggestions? Thanks...

    Bump

Does having the audio work mean it's possible to get the video working as well with this card? Or are they independent and I should just buy a new card...
