Light flickering of screen in Fedora Core 3

I finally got Linux installed last night. At the first boot, I was very excited. However, the left side of the screen flickers. It happens when something new is displayed on screen. (i.e. new window, or just moving the cursor.)

Monitor is Compaq P700 on S3 ProSavage. While testing on Knoppix, there was no problem at all. What's the deal?

Merci, I'm running Fedora Core 3.

    Correction:

The flickering appears everywhere on the screen, not just on the left side, in the form of horizontal lines appearing for about 1/50th of a second, mostly where there is movement on screen, but also when there is no action.
