SSD caching, how its done, is it right solution?
someone needed VPS with SSD caching, he want to use server for websites hosting. What does that mean, this SSD caching and is it optimal solution for this? Also i listen some SSD dont like too much of writting so how one can recognise certain SSD is made the way that its not destroyed soon by writting data (i mean when one have webserver, it is non stopping writting and erasing of data and server need to run like 2 yers...?"Avoid the Gates of Hell. The question doesn't make a lot of sense. If one of your customers is buying a VPS from a hosting provider, the fact that they have SSDs will just mean it has different performance characteristics to hard disks. The web server and OS caching is pretty smart, though, and it should use main memory to do the caching which would make performance absolutely fine.
The fact that its a hosted solution should mean that the death of the SSDs isn't really a problem - the hosting provider is carrying the risk of hardware failure, and will have all it's own data backups and failover meaning that if a storage unit fails it won't even be noticed by the end users.
Your customer should also be made aware of the limitations of SSDs. Because of the problems with repeated writes causing failures, and because there is no seek time, internally SSDs will swap allocation units around instead of doing deletes - so the physical store for a logical allocation unit gets changed when you delete. The upshot of that is that secure wipes are more difficult with SSDs (you can't just delete/overwrite sectors, you have to physically wipe the entire array several times). If they're storing any sensitive corporate data on this VPS, then perhaps they should consider using a hard disk solution or, even better, hosting it themselves.Linux user #126863 - see http://linuxcounter.net/
