both my soundcards arent working pls help

I have some questions. i have a laptop and a home computer both running SuSE Linux 9.2 (Professional) FTP install so its a full distrubution.

its is running good, but on both computers i have problems with the sound, nothing comes out even though none of the chanels are muted.

the specs are as following:

Home Computer: C-media VIA AC97 Audio Device (as Windows says it)
Laptop: ESS Solo-1

Is linux detecting the soundcard properly?
If not check the maker website for support/drivers.
If yes then try these suggestions:
1>run artsd
2>run aumix at the cmd prompt and ceck the volume levels for the first 2 settings.

Try booting Slax or Knoppix and see if it works better. Then you can see what modules it loads automagically. I use my handy little Slax CD almost everytime I have hardware issues.
