I was actually having problems with CUPS not seeing the parallel port, aparently the kernel modules were setup incorrectly, removing and re-inserting them correctly and a restart of CUPS fixed ...

I forgot where the page I found was at though... The settings included setting the irq to none, along with one other thing... can't remember...
