PCI Soundblaster 16 not working
I have just installed Gentoo on my computer and I can not get my sound card to work. I simply do not know where to start. When I start x-server (KDE) I get a message saying:"device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No Such Device)" I assume this means that it can not find my sound card. I tried downloading Open Sound System (OSS) and installing it but oss gave me an error that it could not remove my old sound driver. This makes no sense to me. Any ideas?
EDIT: I just looked in the KDE control center sound settings. Hitting 'test' for the system bell does not even produce a sound. As for the sound card, it is set to 'autodetect'

Try this link http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/topic-41168.html It is not for a SB16 but it covers anything you would ever want to know about setting up an sound card under Gentoo.
Research, research, research before you walk the plank.
