Some time in the near future I'm planning on building a RAID for my file server since my 80GB drive is mostly filled up. After doing some research I think I have decided on doing a RAID 5 with some 120GB HDs, but I'm not sure if I want to go hardware or software. I have found a few controller cards that support RAID 5, but I've also heard alot of people say that IDE RAID 5 controllers are basically controlled by software anyway so it's pointless to get one.

My question is this....does anyone around here have any first hand experience with hardware RAID 5 and software RAID 5? If so, are there any real advantages to going hardware? Is there alot of load put on the CPU when running software RAID?
