    Aureal Vortex1

OK, another sound card prob. I have an Aureal vortex1 PCI card, Got the drivers for it from sourceforge, and compiled them using $make install20, as per instructions. I was imeadiately blasted with sound . Great! Sounds good too!

I needed to boot into windows for web access (ISP prob), and had no sound when I returned to MDK9.1. A quick look in the KDE control center told me the sound card wasn't working because of "bad module"

Is this going to be a kernel module, or the sound card module, or something else entirely?

OK, I tried to compile/install the drivers again. I got a warning message:
"WARNING:LOADING <path to module>au8820.O WILL TAINT THE KERNEL

    WTF

I'm guessing this is a bad thing

I have a couple of old SB compatible ISA cards, Would I be better off with one of them?

That means that the driver isnt GPL'd/is under a proprietary license
