PCMCIA card insertion results with system freeze

    Hi everybody,

For the last 2 months I am trying to make a wireless card work. I am using Mandrake 10.1 Community with a 2.6.8.1-10mdk kernel. My wireless card is a D-Link DWL-650+ and for last my notebook is a Compaq Evo N160.

My problem is that whenever I insert the card in the PCMCIA slot the system freezes and whenever I take out the card from the slot the system goes on working normally like nothing has happened.

    I did the following:
    - I stopped the pcmcia service from Mandrake Control Center.
    - I inserted the card into the slot.
    - I started the pcmcia service from Mandrake Control Center.
    - They system freezed.
    - I tooke out the card from the slot.
    - A box appeared with the following information in it:

    Code:

    Shutting down PCMCIA services: done.
Starting PCMCIA services: cardmgr[4854]: watching 1 socket
cardmgr[4854]: could not adjust resource: IO ports 0xc00-0xcff: Input/output error

cardmgr[4854]: could not adjust resource: irq 8: Input/output error
cardmgr[4854]: could not adjust resource: irq 9: Input/output error
cardmgr[4854]: could not adjust resource: irq 10: Input/output error
cardmgr[4854]: could not adjust resource: irq 11: Input/output error
cardmgr[4854]: could not adjust resource: irq 12: Input/output error
cardmgr[4854]: could not adjust resource: irq 13: Input/output error
cardmgr[4854]: could not adjust resource: irq 14: Input/output error
cardmgr[4854]: could not adjust resource: irq 15: Input/output error
    done.
I also tried this card with 3 different distros (Ubuntu, Mandrake, DSL) with 3 different notebooks. I always got the same results.

So does anybody have any idea about the problem? Any suggestions will help.

    Thanks

    Birgi

Not sure if this helps, but maybe it's the card. I have the exact same card, actually two of them. I use them both on ubuntu 5.10 just fine.
The only thing I do different is that I don't stop or start the pcmcia service. All I do is insert the card when I want to use it, and pull it out when I'm done. Works like a champ. It does take quite a while to connect and negotiate an IP address, but that's about the only down side.

    gypsy98101,

Thanks for your reply. I also have two of them. Yesterday I realized that one is not working as you say. However the other one works very well in XP, but still causes freeze in Linux. So I gave up after 2.5 month and bought an usb wireless adapter .

    Thanks

    Birgi
