    usb modem configuration

i have a usb isdn modem connected to my pc.i'm running suse linux 9 which doesnot recognise it .i've downloaded the instructions to set up it from the manufacturer page and i tried to configure it.
firstly i did cd usr/src/linux-2.4.xx (my linux version)
then when i tried to do make xconfig there was a problem (error1) and i couldn't go on
is there any other way to make my modem work?
    any suggestions appreciated.....
