you have to put an entry in /etc/fstab

Depends on the distro - Ubuntu, Fedora Core, SuSE, or really any desktop distros should mount it automatically. Putting an entry in fstab isn't really going to help, since it's just going to make it easier to mount it manually, not do the actual auto-mount. What's the situation?
