Help me understand linux harddrives
Greetings all :). I have a couple of questions regarding hard drives in linux. I have a 30GB hd that i'm trying to split up into 2 15gb partitions and when running fdisk /dev/sdb i recieve this message:
(what exactly does this mean? what are cylinders?)
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 4079.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
(what does blocks mean? what does start and end represent?)

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
In the end if somebody could expalin to me what sectors/tracks/cylinders are and how to split up the drive equally (15GB each) i would really appreciate it. i've been reading thru the net but most discussions about harddrives get pretty technical and i'm just looking to understand the basics of it.
