Is there an external hard drive supported by Linux. I have heard horror tales of trying to use Maxtor One Touch series
I've never run into one that doesn't work. And I'd say I've used ~40-50 different models over the years.

All the externals that I've used work with Linux as well. There are some special applications that come with some of them that might not work with Linux, as they are usually Windows only applications, but the drives themselves seem to work perfectly.
I've used Maxtor One Touch drive with Linux. Basically, I don't like the One Touch at all, but they do work. Just don't use the button... My preferences for external drives is to get a good external esata/usb quick-change enclosure (about $50 USD) and a big bare sata drive (1.5TB about $120 USD, 1TB about $90). No muss, no fuss, and I can swap out the drive in about 30 seconds. Cheaper, faster, and more reliable than tape for backups.
