you can manually edit the /etc/wvdial.conf.then type in a console window wvdial and try to connect...does it work?

hey have same problem
i have installed the driver bur it seems linux does not recognise it as kppp will simply closes and wvdial says modem does not responds
if you got it working pls suggest me ok
1. make sure your ISP is linux friendly - call them
2. DSL is easiest
3. for dialup - use an external serial hdwr modem(not USB - they are usually sftwr modems)-- they need no drivers and are faster and connect better than many PCI modems.
4. More dificult is internal PCI modems - both hdwr and sftwr modems will need drivers -- be prepared to spend some time on this
either way -- slower modem speeds give the best combination of speed AND stability.
good luck
Dear All,
I'm also using Motorala SM56 Modem and when I make dialup and hit to connet an error appear on screen "error7 can not activate ppp0".
