no sda?!
Hello, I've been trying unsuccessfully to get my Western Digital External USB HD working on Mandrake 10.1. So far, everyone says to mount it as sd* and to use 'dmesg' to find out which sd to use. Unfortunately, when I 'dmesg' the command prompt, there is no mention of sd anything... Ive read the entire thing line by line and nothing... So far, no one seems to have a response to this.
Thanks,
Michael

Hi, ... i used my mandrake once/couple times to mount my external HD. I hardly can recall i have similiar prob to you ( ie no sda ).
I think Mandrake mounts it in different /dev/ .. i think it was in /dev/hd{something}. try it. Have u tried 'dmesg' and grep Western Digital ?
The other thing is try to plug/unplug the device AND/OR plug it before boots
Hope it will work

Eh, no such luck...
However, upon rading through dmesg again, I notticed this:
Code:
usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using address 2
usb 1-1: control timeout on ep0out
uhci_hcd 0000:00:11.2: Unlink after no-IRQ? Different ACPI or APIC settings may help.
usb 1-1: control timeout on ep0out
usb 1-1: device not accepting address 2, error -110
usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using address 3
usb 1-1: control timeout on ep0out
usb 1-1: control timeout on ep0out
usb 1-1: device not accepting address 3, error -110
Could this be my problem?

with the hard drive in, type:
Code:
cat /proc/bus/usb/devices
and paste the output here :)

and that's ALL that is output from that command? It looks as though it's not picked up the Hard drive for some reason.
Do you have the hotplug and coldplug services started?
Code:
/etc/init.d/hotplug status
/etc/init.d/coldplug status
will tell you.

Hotplug status was this:

that's a lot more tha u should get from hotplug status....
mine outputs:
Code:
root@homer:/home/sdousley/Documents/motion-3.1.19> /etc/init.d/hotplug status
* status: started
Can u just paste the output of JUST that command?
-
I typed it exactly the way you had it and it output the same thing I posted earlier.
-
OK, i am not too sure then.... maybe it needs a driver downloading for it to show up. try searching google for your hard disk model.
Is it actually an external hard disk, or an external caddy with a disk plugged in?
