I wonder if you know of a video card that works well in Linux, because:
The ATI driver hangs up the whole computer to the point where I have to reinstall the OS.
The nVidia driver tries to take over the display settings from the OS which causes things to not work right, and the text terminals (Ctrl+Alt+F?) don't seem to work with it.
I wonder if you know of a video card that will provide hardware acceleration in Linux, without the above issues?
I've been using various nVidia cards with Linux for the last 9 years and have never ran into problems. Are you sure your nVidia card was configured properly?
Pretty much for external add in cards there is only ATI or nvidia now. Most of the other graphics processors are built into motherboards only, like intel, via, matrox, etc. I've also never had a problem with my nvidia card.
What exactly do you mean by did you configure it?
I wonder when you open your Display Settings (not the nVidia one), does it say that your monitor is unknown?
It says mine is unknown, this shouldn't really be a problem. The nvidia-settings is the best way to configure your display when you have an nvidia card.
Do you have an ATI card or an Nvidia card installed at the moment? What were you using to install the drivers?Quote:

What do you mean by what process did you use to install it?
I set it to boot in runlevel 3, executed the file I downloaded, and set it back to runlevel 5.
