Weird sound issue

My left channel "crackels" and distorts (its not the speaker cos left channel on headphones does it too). If I reboot the system sometimes it clears it up, othertimes it doesnt. Its definitely something in OS or driver cos my other OS on same machine never does it...

This is my sound card:
Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

Im running Kubuntu 6.06.

Have you checked all of your levels - anything above 70% can occasionally overdrive the channel/speakers.

Yup, even if i turn it down very low makes no diff....

Any other ideas?
