If your processor is a Core 2 Duo, then you can install an X86_64 distro. If it's an original Core Duo, you cannot.

It is possible to install i386 packages on an X86_64 distribution but I would not recommend it. Is there a particular program you're interested in installing that you can't find in X86_64?
