hi
ive been using pclinux on my compaq laptop. i recently decided to go back to windows so i booted with the quick restore disks and they loaded fine. after the disk ejected the system tried to boot and i got a grub error 17 message.
the restore disks said they removed any partitioning so dont know whats wrong, can anyone help?

Welcome to the forums!

It sounds like GRUB (the Linux bootloader) might still be installed to the master boot record (MBR).
You should be able to remove it by booting with a Windows emergency boot disk and running: fdisk /mbr
...or
Boot with the Windows XP installation CD and from the recovery console type: fixmbr
Doing either one should rewrite the MBR allowing you to reboot directly into Windows, if Windows reinstalled properly.
If neither of those options are available to you, try using the SuperGrub LiveCD:
