Grub not working (Error 22)

When I get to my grub I get the correct options for the operating systems I have installed. (Windows XP and Ubuntu 7.10).

However when I select one of the operating systems I get the message "Error 22: No such partition".

I have found that if I have the Windows XP disk in the drive that I can boot into any of the operating systems without problem. I have reinstalled Linux with Ubuntu, Kubuntu and OpenSUSE. The grub updates but I still get the same error.

Fixed this error.

In my menu.lst file I have changed the instances of

Code:
root (hd1,2)
to be

Code:
root (hd0,2)
Not sure why it would boot with the XP disk in the CD drive though

Boot up from any LiveCD and post the output of sudo fdisk -l command here.

It's okay devils_casper, I've sorted it now (see above).

Also I was able to boot into the operating system as long as the XP cd was in the CD drive. Any ideas why that would happen?
