You can install either a 32-bit (i386, i486, i586, i686, X86) version of Linux or a 64-bit (X86_64) version on that processor. I would recommend you not use Fedora Core 6, however. It's several versions old and you'll likely have a better experience with a newer version.

You do not have to purchase anything to use Fedora or most any other Linux distribution. The only reason you should purchase a physical disc is if you do not have the bandwidth to download them yourself. Even then, you shouldn't pay more than about $5-10USD for it.
