Need a file system answer quick??
Hello all,
Just wondering, I have always just used EXT3 since it was available, well I am just wondering, have any other file systems passed it as a better file system.

I am installing Ubuntu on a laptop, performance is nice but stability is most important.

What file system do you think I should use??

The likely 3 candidates are...
Ext3?
ReiserFS?
JFS?

I honestly don't pay attention to what file system I'm using. Most distributions have used EXT3 by default, but some use ReiserFS. I've not noticed any issues (positive or negative) with either.

Well that's true most default to EXT3, Suse I believe defaults to Reiser, but still it dosent mean on is not better then the other, ya know what I mean...

I know they are coming out with an EXT4 soon too.

Well maybe I will just stay with Ext3 for now...

It's really a preference thing. If one was truly better than the other, all distros would choose to go with the better one. Ext3 has always been highly stable and fast enough for me, so that's what I use.

I thought there was no real difference between them (apart from some highly technical stuff I don't understand) until I tried installing openafs. Apparently the AFS cache file can't sit on a reiser partition, so I had to create a separate ext3 partition to get it to work.

That's the only difference I'm aware of.

Reiser FS is supposed to be much the fastest in terms of disk access - but this advantage only applies to small files. Suse no longer defaults to Reiser, although I believe Yoper does.

XFS is self deframenting, uses lots of ram tho and is also very bad if you dont have a UPS or some form of battery cuz you will lose data if its read/writing. its used in some of the new NAS's and is fast
