Question Internet doesn't work after installation..

I have installed Ubuntu version 8.0 in addition to xp....
after the installation everything seemed to be perfect except the internet..
it wasn't working..
i use broadband connection and have a modem connected to my machine..
it works on xp but not on linux...
need help!!!!!

can you paste the output of the below command

it first asks for the user's password
when i type the password it says..

sudo: etc/init.d/networking: command not found

did you type /etc/init.d/networking without any space ?

ya i didnot give the space..
well the problem is solved ..
actually i had just to configure my modem..
when i did that..
everything started working properly...
