1. Check out information about Linux. Get a book better yet.
2. Check out your hardware list to make sure they are all compatible.
3. Decide wich distro you are going for.
4. Get the distro
5. Coffee and snacks (If you go for gentoo or LFS, these two are strongly recommanded). Tissue if you are emotional
6. Make partitions for your linux
7. Insert Installation disk begin to your linux journey
8. Patience
9. Pray

Giro, I think he asked how to install a *Whole* Linux OS in general way, not how to compile and install a new kernel. Anyway, after compiling a new kernel, don't forget add the entry in your bootloader.
