I would add openSUSE 11.0 to the list. openSUSE, Mandriva, and Ubuntu are certainly the most newbie friendly distributions.

OTOH, if you have paid a lot for your RHEL and have to study for the exam, use it by all means. But it is oriented towards experienced users and servers, not for desktop.
