Installation to external hard drive
Hallo, please help. I want to install Ubuntu 7.10 on an external hard drive and boot my machine from the external hard drive. Is it possible? I dont have an active internet connection at home so i wanted to boot my work PC with the external hard drive and download codecs to run multimedia on my machine. Is this possible and are there any problems that may occur?

Hi and Welcome !
Does your machine's BIOS support booting up from External device?
If your machine doesn't have internet connection, you can use AptonCD to download packages in other machine and install those in yours. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Okk ! Just plug in External disk and install Ubuntu in it. Make sure to install Boot Loader ( GRUB ) in the MBR of external disk only else installer will install GRUB in internal disk and your machine will not boot without plugging in External disk.
To be on safer side, I would suggest you to unplug/disable internal disk during Linux installation. Nothing will go wrong that way and installer will install GRUB in MBR of External disk only.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
