    verifying base user name?

Rather than let it go to landfill, I salvaged an old PC from the trash heap and installed Ubuntu 8.04 on it.

I then put it away in the corner where it sat quietly for 6 months waiting for someone who can use it.
Finally my mother in law says she wants an email machine. Perfect.

But, firing it up to a) update and b) set up for her, I am being prompted for the user name and password at startup.

I know the password (I left if very generic) but my stabs at the username I must have used at the time of install are failing.

Is there an easy way to verify the user name?

(I think that the user name is also the name of a folder on the file system, but I don't know how to get a peek at that to check it.)

How to reset your password in Ubuntu

This tells you how to find the username as well.
