I am trying to virtualise a server which is a few years old onto VMware. The conversion from physical to virtual machine failed and I think it's because the boot loader was lilo and VMware wants grub.

I am very nervous about changing the boot loader in case I stuff it up. If I do stuff the grub configuration and can't reboot the machine, how do I rectify that? I have a Knoppix Live CD which I can boot into, but then once I've booted that up how will I re-enable lilo?

PS, in case anyone is kind enough to compare my grub with the current lilo conf, here they are.

LILO
----
default="linux"
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=menu
keytable=/boot/us.klt
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw

message=/boot/message
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="linux"
root=/dev/hda1
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append=" resume=/dev/hda5"
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="failsafe"
root=/dev/hda1
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append=" failsafe resume=/dev/hda5"

GRUB

kernel /boot//vmlinuz-2.6.12-12mdksmp root=/dev/hda1

Does the new grub conf look OK? (BTW there is only a / partition on this box - no separate /boot partition).

TIA,
