Devils Casper,
the experimental hard drive continues to work without a problem. here is the terminal output from the suspect hard drive. thank you. i will run the test diagnostic on the suspected hard drive right after posting this.
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ mkdir temp
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/sda3 temp
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda3,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ cd temp
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/temp$ ls
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/temp$

Devils Casper,
the suspect hard drive is a hitachi 500gb IDE. i have a hitachi hard drive diagnostic disk. i put the disk in and rebooted and received this:
1. FD 1.44MB System Type-(00)
Starting PC DOS...
after over 5 minutes, nothing had changed. it wouldn't take over 5 minutes for something to happen in dos, would it? any dos utility i have ever used was always immediate and flawless.
i also have hirens boot cd. it includes the hitachi/ibm diagnostic. there are two options, dos and features. it didn't matter which i chose because both of them caused the computer to reboot. i am unable to use hitachi diagnostic tool.
the best i can do, in terms of diagnosis, is run a seatools (which i am doing as we speak) and a MHDD. these will take a while. i will let you know the results.
thanks.

Devils Casper,
i scanned with MHDD and it says this in the right hand column:
3ms--3623593
10ms--196386
50ms--10451
150ms--44
<500ms--4
>500ms--6
i also received warnings at the lower right hand corner:
302165565
314532810
317405895
318910650
318917790
821472555
i don't know how bad this is. seatools found no errors at all.
many tech people haven't even heard of MHDD. it takes an hour and 42 minutes to scan, so it does a thorough job. i have posted at their official site asking about this info.
thanks.
