I've tried copying it to the /lib directory and the /usr/lib directory but packages that need that library still won't install! please help!

If you just copy the lib to a directory, it's still not registered in the package databases. Is this an RPM system? Download the the RPM which contains libslang (search for libslang.so.0 on rpmfind.net) and install that instead.
