When I compiled my gentoo kernel recently I happened to stumble across an option whose help seemed to imply that a wrong setting there could make the kernel fail in a way which seemed to be very similar to your error. Unfortunately, I can't seem to remember which option it was, but if you ever recompile your kernel, you might want to look for it.

Since I like professional, glossy looks to software but adore minimalism, I look forward to compiling my own personal kernel. On that note, I'll look at the kernels of SuSE, Red Hat et al (when I know how
)
and see if I can find the problem. If I can find it, as well as letting the right people know, I'll post it here (forum not thread-it's going to take me awhile).
