I'm not positive this will work because I have not tried it with Win8, but you may wish to try the complete command for updating the grub2 configuration file:
    PHP Code:
    grub-mkconfig -/boot/grub/grub.cfg
"What you think about me is none of my business"

Which distribution of Linux are you using? Also, is that a typo: it is update-grub not grub-update and it needs to be preceded by sudo or run as root.
You may need to install and run os-prober on whichever distribution you are using.

You're right there yancek; I did 'update-grub', as exec sudo - s / root user. CLI return was in order - finding Linux kernels + memtest...

It's 12.04 LTS for now - fresh load.

zen - no other commands in addition? Run this BEFORE update-grub? Or AFTER? Is this reversible, in event it's un-successful?

update-grub is a stub for this command, so AFAIK they both do the same update of the config file

Somewhere in the Ubuntu grub files, it tells you that update-grub just runs the grub-mkconfig posted above. If that doesn't do the job, you might try running: sudo os-prober, you may have to install it first. If that doesn't resolve the problem, you could google bootinfoscript, go to the site, read the instructions, download and run it to see if you can find anything, otherwise post it here, a results.txt script.

Looks like I sometime already loaded os-prober, and run - no success...

    Script results:

You're using uefi boot which I have no experience with and can't help. You seem to have a uefi partition (sda1) but you don't have an entry in the grub.cfg file for windows and the only partitions which show boot files for windows are sda1 and sda5. Might try a chainloader entry for one of those partitions.
