Speed difference between booting from USB and booting from CD/DVD

I have been booting Linux distros from the disk drive for the past couple of years. As expected, it takes quite a long time to boot up and run that way (unless I'm using one that stores itself in the RAM like Puppy, in which the latter takes faster). How much faster or slower do distros load and run when running from USB drives?

Not just linux but any data wil be read a lot faster from a USB stick than from cd/dvd. Even a usb hard drive is usually faster than a cd.
