Installing distro to USB
I want to run live w/ persistence or install as "desktop" (either way). Any ideas?

I'm not sure I understand what the question is. Maybe you are setting up the persistent storage wrong? Do you get any error messages during boot?
Rufus has always worked fine for me. The new version lacks the "DD" feature (which emulates GNU dd command) so you should use version 2.18, and use the DD mode.
Also, Unetbootin is discouraged by the Debian team, so I wouldn't use it.

RE: CaterCox
Apolgies: the question would be what must be done to set up a 'live" distro w/ persistence. MORE INFO:: I've tried 2 different methods and both failed. If you wish futher explanation, please request.

So you want to keep files on the stick or do you want to keep settings and such?
For example, here is a guide to install Arch Linux on a USB stick.

RE: CarterCox;
Always appreciate your response(s). I apologize for taking so long to reply. I never did figure out the persistence issue and have now moved on to 19.1. I must say I no longer have the persistence issue w/ 19.1, however, it has presented a whole 'nother batch of problems. If you wish, I've opened a thread in the "linuxmint" forum @ this site.
