I can't install ubuntu

Hi all,
I've just downloaded ubuntu and burned it on a cd.
I restarted my laptop with the cd in, but the installer doesn't start.
I configured the bios so the cd-rom boots first.
Actually I've two partitions: winXP and RedHat9 and I use GRUB as bootLoader. I would like to try ubuntu on a thirth partition.
I thought to make the thirth partition with the help of the ubuntu installer... but it doesn't start

any idea to help me?

bye bye

Can you open the burned CD in Windows Explorer? If you can, what is on it? Is just a single .iso file, or are there multiple files and directories?

Did you burn the ubunto iso to the cd as an image and not just copied the file onto it?

Also did you burn the cd as a slow enough speed? e.g. x8

No, I didn't burn the cd as an image! What does it mean? How can I do it in winXp?
And if I open it in win I just see a .iso file.
Sorry for my ignorance!

thanks

That means that you incorrectly burned it. What probably happened was you essentially just copied the file over to the cd. Which program did you use to burn it?

It could be that it just does not see his CDROM I have a test box in the basement that for some reason the bios always sees the drive and boots the cd but after the linux kernel is loaded and it then looks for the cd to start the install it can not find a disk in the drive.
OS's that load
SuSE 9.2
Redhat 9.0
FreeBSD 4.8 (which it is running now)
Linspire

OS's that fail
Mandrake 10.0
Slackware 9.?
ubuntu
Lyciros
Knoppix
Sorry I posted this while the above post about only seeing an ISO image file on the disk was being posted please disregard
