untar & install a program
I feel so daft, I have forgotten how to untar & install a program.
I am a mewbie and have had problems with Mandrake 9.1, having installed it 10 times due to various things, I think I have at last got a good install.
Anyway, I got a kpassword.tar.gz password program that I would like to install.
Please, what are the commands. I have put the file in my home directory.
In the readme it says, I tried all this, but get errors, no directory or command.

Just running
$QTDIR/bin/qmake -project "CONFIG += qt warn_on release thread"
$QTDIR/bin/qmake

May I thank you in advance, your help is very greatly appreciated.

.tar.gz means its zipped. you need to extract it. try right clicking on it then have it "extract here"

try
gunzip filename.tar.gz
tar xvf filename.tar
go to directory created from the tar xvf command and do
configue
make install
install
make clean
the above should do it

You can skip the gunzip step by doing tar -xzvf filename.

Note also that you will have to do ./configure unless you have added . to your PATH.
