Doesn't it say anything else? In that case, check your logs after boot to get more clues.
If you modprobe for it manually, can you then see eth0 with ifconfig ...

FINALLY! I got my freaking network working in Gentoo. Turns out I never compiled the ethernet module as a module, and I had to make a quick change to my /etc/conf.d/net. Well this has certainly been a learning experience, thank you everyone, especially Dolda for all the help.
