    erm thanx....

can you say all that again- in english for dummies like me? i have absolutely no idea wat you are saying. forgive me, when i said i was a newbie to linux, that can't be further from the truth.

Loking at the soundsystem settings in KDE it lists in options OSS as well as ALSA, but when i choose OSS it still loads up no sound. does OSS support my card???

    OSS probably doesn't support it.
    Download this file:
    ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/drive...-0.9.6.tar.bz2
Then open a terminal and run these commands:
    Code:
    tar -xvjf alsa-driver-0.9.6.tar.bz2
    cd alsa-driver-0.9.6
    make
    su -c "make install"
When the su command asks you for a password, type the root password. If all these steps are successfully completed (check for errors), then you should have the latest version of the ALSA drivers installed, including the snd-ice1724 driver. Then try that one.

i've installed commercial version of oss which seems to give me 2 speaker sound only in xine and a few other progs. no midi files can be played or any other sound (like kde sounds)

oh well back to square 1 i suppose

when i go into ther driver directory and type 'make' it says:-

Please, run the configure script as first...

when i type make install under su it says this:-

    rm -f /snd*.o /persist.o /isapnp.o
    make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver-0.9.6/support'
Makefile:9: ../Makefile.conf: No such file or directory
Makefile:27: /Rules.make: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `/Rules.make'. Stop.
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver-0.9.6/support'
    make: *** [install-modules] Error 1

io also tried following the instructions from alsa webpage for my card at
    http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...module=ice1724

but still no luck when trying to install the driver (alsa-;ib/utils seem fine)

    help

You probably need to have the kernel source code installed. It comes on the Mandrake CDs, under the name kernel-source. Install it and try again.

Is that driver file posted up there specific to his soundcard, or is there hope I might get at least mono sound with my Audigy 2 if I install it?

ALSA has support for many sound cards, but if you're already using OSS it might be a pain to upgrade. Are you using ALSA or OSS?
