I am a little confused here...do I need a specific driver for my chipset, besides ac97.o and ac97_codec.o? I have a Biostar 'board with a Via8233 sound chip. If I do not need an additional driver, what should my modules.conf look like? lsmod says that ac97 and ac97_codec are not being used.

I think that module is for Via82c586 and 686, which aren't related (to my knowledge) related to the 8233.
Cool picture, by-the-way. You can find a couple of me here I'm on the left. Sorry, it's the only one I've got right now... I'll be amazed if you can see that page; my relatives on the East coast of the U.S. always get DNS errors when they try to view my pages.

OK, I checked a little, and it seems that there aren't any OSS drivers for your chip. ALSA has the driver you need, though.
Btw., that DNS worked.
