want to dual boot with 3.1
Is it possible for me to make a new partition by taking some other partition's space, so that I can boot a nice early version of windows? If so what would that be?

yeah resize one of the ones u have now so there is room. look around on freshmeat for something that can do this.

If you have a cd burner, you could use System Rescue CD (http://www.sysresccd.org/). Boot it up--it's a livecd--and run qtparted from it. That should let you resize and create lots of different types of partitions.
